It's traditional in several cultures to perform a dumb supper around Halloween/Samhain. This is a dinner where you invite not only living friends and relatives, but also those that have passed over. Here are the steps for hosting your own Dumb Supper.
-Invite living and dead participants.
-Everyone (living) must dress up - costumes or fancy dress is up to you.
-Set the table with your finest.
-Prepare a meal or host a potluck and have the food out for serving.
-Ground and center yourselves to allow all participants to be as present as possible.
-While gathered (and until after dinner) there can be no talking.
-No one can serve themselves, you serve other people food - don't forget to serve the dead.
-When the dishes are cleared from the table and the food is done, the talking can begin. This is a good time to share experiences and talk about any interesting moments that happened.
The spell begins with creating a map grid. Print out a map of your area. I did this with a may of Sonoma County, but you could also focus on your town or neighborhood. Determine if you want to use a sacred symbol as your grid or if you'd like to start with simple protective boundaries. If you know of any sacred sites within your grid even better!
Create the charms outlined below and deploy these charms in strategic places according to your grid. Fill in more charms where you feel necessary. Ideally, add charms in places where witches live and can "power" the grid at any time.
Use this grid as a protection boundary, to do spell work, ritual, and planet healing work. The goal is to work with the environment - not against it. I find weather magick highly problematic when we try and force nature.
Again, the specifics of this charm are for fire prevention, therefore it utilizes herbs and objects that are in alignment with fire prevention, lightening prevention, and general protection. These objects can easily be adjusted for rain, blizzards, hurricanes, tornadoes, dust storms, or any other climate disaster (assuming you have time to prepare).
Fire Prevention Charm
For this working you will need:
-Lightening struck wood or Rowan wood that has grown out of a dead tree in small twig sized pieces (this will not be easy to find)
Using a mortar and pestle grind up the mistletoe and redwood bark. (Remember mistletoe is poisonous, don't eat this or use your mortar and pestle for food afterwards.) Wrap the red thread around two of the sticks to make an X shape. Dust the wood hexes with the herb powder. Focus your energy on fire prevention/protection energy. You may want to sing, chant, or tone to seal in your energy.
Deploy the wood hexes strategically in and around your area. Meaning, bury them in the ground in places where they will not easily be uncovered. Charge this grid anytime you feel the need or there is high fire danger.
Connect with other witches - many hands make for lighter work.
If you are looking to call new love into your life, use this recipe for love powder. This powder can be used to sprinkle on your clothes before going out. Make sure to speak your intention before sprinkling the powder on yourself. You can also burn this powder as an incense and do a love drawing smoke cleanse.
You will need the following ingredients:
-Dried basil leaves
-Dried lavender flowers
-Dried rose petals
-Dried yarrow flowers
In a mortar and pestle grind up all the herbs until they are a super fine powder. Speak out loud your desire for love and what you want that love to look like. Use baby powder as a base and mix the powdered herbs into the baby powder. Dust yourself with love anytime you need it!
Moon water can be used for virtually any magickal purpose. However, from a traditional witchcraft perspective moon water was used for healing magick most often. Moon water has an expiration date and you can't store it forever. Use up your moon water before the next full moon in order to it to hold it's potency. This working needs to be done as close to the moment of the full moon as possible. To make moon water, you will need the following items:
-Large glass bowl
Fill the bowl up with spring water and leave it out overnight. If you can leave it outdoors this is the best options. In a windowsill or open door, is the second best option. Leave the water out for 24 hours.
After the time is up, pour the water into a jar for safe keeping.
This water can be used to drink, wash with, use in potions and spells, or put on your eyelids or third eye.
Floor washing is a folk magickal way of cleansing your home or living space of negative energy. Cleansing can be done at any time, but especially after a challenging period, fight, or when dealing with a string of bad luck. Floor washes are exactly what they sound like. It is a magickal mixture that you use to wash the floors. It takes a lot of work, but it will totally shift energy.
This spell is best performed on a new moon. Make sure you have a solid intention of cleansing and clearing out stuck or negative energy through all of the steps of this spell.
For this spell you will need:
-One cup of dried basil
-One cup of dried hyssop
-One cup of dried pine needles
Mix all the dried herbs together in a large bowl. Split the mixture into groups depending on what type of flooring you have. For example, in my house we have about half hard floor and half carpeting. So I would split the mixture half in half.
For carpeting keep the herbs dry and mix them with a bit (like two big tablespoons) of baking soda. Sprinkle this on your carpet and then vacuum it up.
Fill a big pot with water and place it on the stove. Add the herb mixture and bring the water to a boil. Remove from the heat and let it cool completely. Once cool, strain out all of the herbs and add a tablespoon of vinegar. Use this water to wash your floors and countertops.
This spell will help you to break, stop, or banish any bad habits that you are ready to let go of. This spell is best performed during a New Moon. To perform this spell you will need the following items:
-Double terminated quartz crystal OR amethyst OR kunzite OR lepidolite
-A charm bag (a small drawstring bag that can fit in your pocket)
-Eucalyptus in any form
On a new moon take some time in contemplation on the bad habit you are ready to release. Take a cleansing bath or shower. Energetically and physically wash that bad habit off of your body and spirit. Watch as the water goes down the drain, taking your bad habit along with it.
Gather all the above items in one space. Light the incense and use this to smoke cleanse your body and the stone. Place the stone in the charm bag with the eucalyptus. Leave this out in your windowsill for the night.
The next morning, place the charm bag in your pocket. Keep it with you at all times. Put the charm bag under your pillow while you sleep at night.
*As with any spells, please do not use any products that you are allergic to!
Use this spell anytime you are seeking justice on a situation.
You will need the following supplies for this spell:
Set up your spell working space with the Justice card in the center. Ground the gravel root as finely as possible, focusing on your desire to justice.
Hold the candle in your hands and visualize your desire for justice coming to fruition.
Shake the gravel root across the parchment paper. Spread the oil over your hands and anoint the taper candle with it. Roll the anointing candle in the ground herbs. Again, focus on your goal for justice.
Write your desire for justice on the small brown bag piece of paper. Place this paper under the candle and light the candle. Sit with the candle as it burns focusing in meditation on your goal.
Use this infusion to help you to see the entities from the other realms (like fairies) more easily. This working is best done on a full moon, closer to the Spring Equinox or Beltane.
For this enchantment mixture you will need:
Use an incense like myrrh or frankincense to smoke cleanse the the jar. Fill half the jar with calendula and then fill with water to the top of the jar. Seal the top and set it in a cool, dark place. Shake this jar every day for seven days. On the final day, strain the water. Toss out the remaining plant materials and keep the water.
Use this water to connect with the fairy realms. You can put it on a cotton ball and swab it over your eyelids or you can anoint your third eye with this water. It will keep for a couple of weeks in the fridge or mix it with equal parts alcohol and it will keep longer.
*Don't use this mixture if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.
Banishing powder comes in handy when you need to rid yourself of troublesome entities. These entities could be in the form of unwanted people or spirits causing a ruckus. Powders are a form of discreet magick and spellwork. So be cautious when using powders, a little goes a long way.
Powders can be "deployed" where the troublesome spirit is hanging out or dusted on items or objects that the spirit may come into contact with. You can use banishing powders on candles for candle magick or dust it on a specific person's belongings. You can also sprinkle banishing powder where you know the unwanted visitor will walk.
When you deploy the power make sure to speak your intention out loud.
You will need the following ingredients:
-Dragon's Blood Resin
Use a bit more than a pinch of each of the ingredients (one part each) and combine them in a mortar and pestle. Grind until you have a fine powder, all the while focusing your energy and intention on banishing the unwanted energies.
Use immediately or put in a jar and store in a dark cool place. Make sure to label is correctly, you DON'T want to accidently eat this mixture.
Asperging is the practice of sprinkling liquids upon a person or thing to spiritually cleanse it. You might also (gently) smack a person's body with herbs that have been dipped in cleansing liquids as an asperging. This type of cleansing offers some of the same benefits as a smoke cleanse.
Different herbs and waters have different cleansing properties, but here are a few to get you started.
